Neuer Sidelined After Foot Injury
Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is set for a spell on the sidelines after suffering a partial ligament tear in his right foot. The German club confirmed the diagnosis on Sunday following an examination by the FC Bayern medical unit.
The injury occurred shortly before halftime during Bayern's 2-1 win away against Mainz on Saturday. The club did not provide an exact timeline for how long the German goalkeeper will be out. In an official statement, the club announced that their captain will be out of action for the time being.
Jonas Urbig Steps Up Again
With Neuer forced off the pitch, replacement goalkeeper Jonas Urbig took his place in goal. Urbig has stepped in frequently for the veteran goalkeeper throughout this campaign.
The 23 year old is seen as the long term successor to Neuer at Bayern Munich. The current layoff presents him with an opportunity to show he can handle the responsibilities of the main role. So far this season, both Neuer and Urbig have logged five league appearances each for the German champions.
Bittersweet Milestone And Team Setbacks
The injury made Saturday a bittersweet occasion for Neuer. During the match against Mainz, he set a new club record by becoming Bayern's oldest player in Bundesliga history at 40 years and 225 days old.
This injury is yet another challenge for Bayern Munich during a difficult period for the team. Head coach Vincent Kompany recently experienced health issues after collapsing during a training session. The manager was hospitalised for treatment regarding meningeal irritation, which involves inflammation of the tissue surrounding the brain or spinal cord.
