Late heartbreak at Old Trafford
Manchester United fans hoped to enjoy themselves at Manchester City's expense on Saturday, but they left Old Trafford disappointed. Their own team had plenty of problems to worry about. Bryan Mbeumo gave United the lead midway through the second half, and Tottenham were down to 10 men after Rodrigo Bentancur received a red card for head-butting Luke Shaw. Even with the man advantage, United failed to see the game out.
Dominic Solanke scored a header in the 92nd minute to secure a 1-1 draw for Tottenham. It was the third time this season that United have conceded in stoppage time. Michael Carrick admitted he was massively disappointed with the result, stating that his team should have found a way to see the match through.
Growing pressure on Michael Carrick
The latest points dropped leave United with their worst start to a season after six games since 1986. Fans jeered after just 20 minutes as Tottenham started brightly. Carrick noted that late goals have cost the team four points already, changing the look of the table and the mood around the club. The performance pointed to a fragile mentality and trouble dealing with pressure.
Carlos Baleba made his debut as a second-half substitute following his summer transfer from Brighton and Hove Albion, offering some energy and hope for the future. Yet his positive cameo was completely overshadowed by the inability of United to close out a game they were leading. United have now failed to win any of their past three matches against teams with 10 men.
