Pressure builds at Old Trafford
Manchester United are actively weighing up options to replace head coach Michael Carrick. His future at the club is in serious doubt after another painful result at home.
United suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. The loss put immense pressure on Carrick, coming only five days after a 4-1 defeat against Como in the Champions League on Wednesday.
United have now gone eight games without a win in all competitions. They sit in 16th place in the Premier League table, remaining just one point above the relegation places.
Possible replacements on the radar
With Carrick under fire, United are evaluating potential contenders to take over the team. Former Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and former Germany boss Julian Nagelsmann are among the names being considered. Both coaches are currently out of work.
There are other names connected to the role. Former Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna impressed United leaders in talks during the summer of 2024 before the club chose to keep Erik ten Hag. Meanwhile, Antonio Conte left Napoli in the summer and would be open to talks if United decide to contact him.
Carrick remains in the dark
United previously carried out due diligence on a number of managers before giving Carrick a contract for two years in May. That decision followed a successful period as interim boss. However, there is a strong feeling inside the club that they are fully prepared if Carrick is relieved of his duties.
Speaking after the home defeat to Bournemouth, Carrick insisted he was not sure about his future. He said that he totally understands the situation and added that he is not expecting anything in particular, choosing to carry on as normal.
