Hostile Reception at Anfield
Manchester City arrived at Anfield through the back door using a police escort and back streets. They faced immediate hostility after an independent commission found them guilty during the international break of all charges related to serious financial rules breaches. Premier League CEO Richard Masters accused City of systemically breaking rules for almost a decade.
Liverpool fans had plenty of reasons to feel aggrieved. The independent commission found that City inflated their commercial income by over 900 million pounds during the investigation period covering seasons between 2009 and 2018. Liverpool finished runners-up to City by a single point in both 2018-19 and 2021-22. Supporters on The Kop filled the stadium with chants of cheats and held up brutal banners directed at the club.
Erling Haaland and On-Pitch Defiance
Despite the vitriol from the stands and pre-match playlist messages from the stadium DJ featuring tracks like Blame by Calvin Harris, the team on the pitch focused on the game. Following a red card to Ryan Gravenberch for a second yellow card, Erling Haaland scored his sixth league goal of the season just three minutes later. It marked Haaland's 118th Premier League goal in 138 appearances for Manchester City since joining from Borussia Dortmund in 2022.
Later in the match, substitute Jeremy Doku replaced Iliman Ndiaye and scored City's second goal. The 3-0 victory ended with City celebrating on the pitch to the tune of Fleetwood Mac's Little Lies. While the win kept them at the top of the league, the depth of their squad continued to highlight the financial advantages that have drawn so much anger from rival fans.
