Manchester City Face Huge Financial Verdict
Manchester City have been found guilty of serious financial breaches by an independent commission. The Premier League released a bombshell statement on Tuesday detailing the club's guilt regarding rule violations between 2009 and 2018.
City have already announced their intention to fight this decision. The club has until Friday, October 2 to officially file their appeal against the verdict.
In a public statement, Manchester City stated they will pursue all open appeal avenues. They claim the commission's opinion contains clear errors of law, principle and fact, making the decision unsafe.
CEO Denies Secret Funding Accusations
Club chief executive Ferran Soriano sent a video message to Manchester City staff to reassure them. He insisted that the entire case is built on a single false accusation.
Soriano said, "The whole Premier League case against us is based on a single false accusation." He denied that the owner's personal money was secretly put into the club through sponsors from Abu Dhabi, calling the claim untrue. He confirmed that the club's legal team is preparing an appeal to address these errors.
The Premier League first announced the charges against Manchester City back in February 2023. The league now wants to resolve the entire process, including appeals, as quickly as possible.
Expulsion Fears and Heavy Backlash
The issue of what punishment Manchester City will face has not been decided yet. This will be handled in a separate hearing with the independent commission.
The verdict has already caused a major stir. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy suggested that this guilty verdict could even lead to Manchester City being expelled from the Premier League.
Former player Roy Keane also spoke out about the situation. Keane said he would put his medals "in the bin" after what he described as cheating.
