The Threat of Expulsion
An independent commission has found Manchester City guilty of all charges regarding financial breaches. This has led to warnings that the club could be thrown out of the Premier League.
The league stated that City broke financial rules on a massive scale from 2009 to 2018. They did this by setting up fake commercial deals to hide their funding. Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy warned that expulsion is a real possibility if the allegations are upheld. She noted that a club can be expelled from the Premier League with huge repercussions for everybody.
Inside the Nine Hundred Million Fraud
The scale of the rule breaking is historic. Football finance expert Kieran Maguire pointed out that the money involved is about 900 million pounds over a nine year period. He described it as a massive misstatement and a form of fraud. Since the club's auditors did not know about it, Maguire suggested there must have been collusion inside the club.
Former Manchester City chairman David Bernstein did not hold back either. He called the findings terrible and suggested that the current board should be suspended immediately. Bernstein added that if the club loses its appeal, they must be kicked out of the league.
Club Appeal and Reaction
Manchester City have already announced that they plan to appeal the decision. The club claims the commission made clear errors of law, principle, and fact. Some legal experts believe City might try to take the dispute to standard legal courts rather than football authorities.
Meanwhile, reactions from fans and former players have been harsh. Fan podcast host David Mooney called it a dark day and said the club lied to the fans. Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane called the situation cheating. Keane said that if he were a City player, he would throw all his winners medals in the bin.
