Break in at Manchesterplatz

A memorial site in Germany dedicated to the 1958 Munich air disaster has been targeted by vandals. A glass display box located at Manchesterplatz in Munich was broken into, and several items kept inside were stolen.

This site holds deep historical importance for football fans around the world. It was set up to honour the 23 people who died when a plane crashed on a Munich runway back in February 1958. Among those who tragically lost their lives were eight Manchester United players and three club staff members.

The glass box houses special Manchester United memorabilia to keep the memory of the tragedy alive for visitors and visiting fans.

Rapid Response to Damage

The Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation confirmed that the theft and damage took place. After learning about the incident, Manchester United reached out and offered to cover the full cost of repairing the display. However, the foundation had already handled the repairs before the offer came in.

Foundation chair Ifty Ahmed shared his feelings about the incident, stating that the organization was deeply saddened by the act of vandalism and theft. He highlighted the huge meaning that Manchesterplatz holds for the families of the 23 victims, as well as for Manchester United supporters across the globe.

Unbroken Bond Between Cities

Ahmed expressed special gratitude to friends in Munich, giving specific thanks to a group called the Red Docs. He praised their continuous care and quick work to repair the damage right after the incident occurred.

He made it clear that while those responsible damaged a display case and took treasured items, they cannot steal memories or destroy the legacy of the people being remembered. He added that the bond between Manchester and Munich will remain unbreakable.
