A Historic Verdict
Manchester City are expected to be found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges brought against them for breaching Premier League financial rules. These breaches occurred between 2009 and 2018. Although City deny the charges and plan to appeal, the verdict threatens to ruin the legacy of their most successful era.
The club could face severe punishments, including massive points deductions, huge fines, and potential relegation. Rival teams are already preparing for the fallout. In 2024, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, and Tottenham served legal notices to reserve the right to seek compensation for lost titles and earnings.
Real Consequences for Legends
City's rule-breaking had massive consequences for other teams. During the 2013-14 season, Liverpool finished second, meaning Steven Gerrard retired without a Premier League medal. Former Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho also finished second to City in 2018, an achievement he later called his greatest because of the financial power he was up against.
Former United players have reacted quickly to the news. Rio Ferdinand joked about adding another Premier League medal to his cabinet. David de Gea posted on social media to ask how many titles he has actually won now.
Raiding the Competition
To build their empire, City used inflated sponsorship deals and off-the-books payments to pay massive wages. Arsenal were victims of this strategy. City repeatedly raided Arsene Wenger's squad, signing Kolo Toure, Emmanuel Adebayor, Bacary Sagna, Gael Clichy, and Samir Nasri.
Wenger once described this lavish spending as financial doping. While Arsenal had to borrow money to build their stadium, City used their wealth to strip their rivals of key players. This spending helped City become a dominant force, but the upcoming verdict means those victories will always carry a stain.
