Wrong Notes Do Not Stop Mamardashvili

Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili revealed that his research notes were completely wrong during the penalty shootout victory over Chelsea. The keeper, who serves as deputy to first choice Alisson, was handed a paper containing information on Chelsea penalty takers before the deciding moments.

However, the pre match information did not help him. Mamardashvili admitted after the match that everything written on the paper was wrong. When asked directly if the research assisted him during the shootout, he simply answered no.

How The Heroics Saved Liverpool

The Carabao Cup tie ended in a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night before moving to penalties. Liverpool faced early pressure during the shootout following misses from Kostas Tsimikas and Valentín Barco.

Mamardashvili then produced the decisive moment by saving a spot kick from Chelsea attacker Emmanuel Emegha. Explaining his technique, Mamardashvili said he looked at where Emegha placed his standing leg before committing to dive to his right side.

His save set the stage for Joe Gomez, who scored the winning penalty to secure victory for Liverpool. Mamardashvili later said he wanted to save more penalties, but sometimes one save is enough.

Manager Iraola Shows Faith In Deputy

Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola praised the goalkeeper after his big moment. Iraola recalled that Mamardashvili had already delivered a really good performance against Spurs in his first game for the club.

Before the shootout started, Iraola told the keeper that he needed him to save two penalties. Mamardashvili answered by saying they had to allow somebody to miss a penalty as well.

Iraola added that while every team uses research, players sometimes change their approach. He noted that his keeper guessed correctly on a lot of the penalties, even when he could not stop them.

Quarterfinal Draw Ahead

The penalty victory moves Liverpool into the Carabao Cup quarterfinals. The club was drawn to face Bournemouth in the next round of the competition.

Reflecting on the quarterfinal draw, Iraola stated that Bournemouth was the only team he did not want to meet. Liverpool will now look forward to preparing for that match.
