Red Hot Form Continues
Luka Doncic stayed on fire on Monday night as he dropped 42 points to help the Los Angeles Lakers defeat the Miami Heat 138-117. The win moved Los Angeles to a 6-2 record on the season while Miami fell to 2-5.
This was the fourth time in five games that the 27 year old star scored 40 points or more. Doncic currently leads the league with an average of 38.8 points per game. He also recorded 13 assists against Miami, helping his team score on six out of seven possessions when he was double teamed on ball screens.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick praised the team effort after they collected 39 assists in the game. That was their highest total since Redick took over as coach in the 2024 to 2025 season.
High Praise From Giannis
Miami star Giannis Antetokounmpo was full of respect for Doncic after the game. Giannis, who averages 28.4 points per game, called Doncic one of the greatest scorers of all time.
Giannis stated that Doncic is one of the best scorers to play the game. When asked if he meant right now, Giannis clarified that he meant of all time, adding that some people are scared to say it.
That is major praise coming from Giannis, who has nearly 22,000 career points and sits at number 41 on the all time scoring list just behind Larry Bird.
Historic Scoring Numbers
Doncic holds a career average of 29.32 points per game in the regular season. Only Michael Jordan with 30.12 and Wilt Chamberlain with 30.07 sit ahead of him. His playoff average is even higher at 30.9 points per game.
The win against Miami was also the fifth game in a row where Doncic scored at least 20 points in the first half. He is the first Lakers player to accomplish that since Kobe Bryant in 2007.
Over his last five games, Doncic is averaging 43.4 points while shooting 53.2 percent from the field, 44.7 percent from three point range, and 89.1 percent from the free throw line. He is currently on pace to win his third career scoring title and second in a row.
Focus On Winning Games
Teammate Quentin Grimes admitted after the game that it feels like every shot Doncic takes is going into the basket. Grimes described the scoring stretch as a crazy heater.
Despite his impressive scoring numbers, Doncic kept his focus on the team results. The Lakers moved up to number four in the Western Conference standings after winning both games in their back to back set against Miami and the Toronto Raptors.
Doncic noted after the game that winning makes everything feel much better.
