Intense pregame preparation
Before a preseason game in Las Vegas against the Golden State Warriors, Luka Doncic put himself through a tough pregame drill. Given the night off by coach JJ Redick, the star guard played a one-on-three battle against Lakers assistant coaches. Michael Wexler, Justin Robinson, and Greg St. Jean used a foam stick and double teams to challenge him on the court.
Doncic showed off his skills with pull-up three pointers, hesitation moves, and a one-legged fadeaway jumper. Rob Pelinka and physiotherapist Javy Barrio watched from the bench. Barrio's main job is keeping Doncic healthy after a late-season hamstring injury sidelined him for the playoffs last spring.
Stepping into a leadership role
With LeBron James signing with the Philadelphia 76ers in free agency, the path is clear for Doncic to become the main face of the franchise. He gave feedback to the front office during roster construction and hosted the team for a four-year minicamp and bonding trip in Ljubljana, Slovenia, in August.
Coach Redick noted a natural chemistry with the group that started over the summer. Doncic also maintained a strict workout and dietary regimen, showing off an improved physique. Backup center Kevon Looney expressed confidence, stating that players feel they can beat anyone with Doncic on the floor.
Championship hopes and new faces
Doncic told reporters that he believes the Lakers can win a championship this season. If you do not think they can win, he noted, you should not be here. The team brought in new free agents, including Walker Kessler, Quentin Grimes, Sandro Mamukelashvili, and Collin Sexton, though these new pieces have limited playoff experience.
Coach Redick also likes the team because of their talent, fit, and depth. The regular season opens on Wednesday against the Warriors.
