Doncic shines in win over Portland
Luka Doncic delivered a season-high 53 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to a 124-118 victory against the Portland Trail Blazers at Crypto.com Arena. The Slovenian star also scored with a 62-foot heave at the halftime buzzer that helped fuel the comeback win.
Following the game, Lakers coach JJ Redick praised his star player. Luka can do some things that maybe a handful, if not no one, can do in basketball, Redick said.
Chasing a rare scoring record
Doncic is currently averaging a career-high 40.1 points per game through 10 games, captaining the top offense in the NBA. No player has averaged 40 points in a season since Wilt Chamberlain in the 1962-63 season, though legends like Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, and James Harden came close in past years.
Doncic is taking on a massive role for the Lakers this season following the offseason departure of LeBron James to the Philadelphia 76ers. Entering Friday, Doncic led the league in scoring, shot attempts, three-point attempts, free throw attempts, usage rate, player efficiency rating, and win shares.
Looking ahead at a long season
This performance marked the sixth time this season that Doncic has exceeded 40 points, and the second time he topped 50 points. He also joined Kobe Bryant, Elgin Baylor, and George Mikan as the only players in franchise history to score at least 40 points in four consecutive games.
Despite the historic pace, Doncic remains focused on team success. It is obviously a long season, Doncic said, noting that they have 72 games left. As long as we are winning, I am good. Blazers coach Micah Nori also offered high praise before the game, calling Doncic the MVP right now, hands down.
