London derby returns as Millwall host West Ham after 14 years

A fierce rivalry renewed

Millwall and West Ham United will play each other this Saturday for the first time in 14 years. This will be the 100th meeting between the two London clubs, and the match will take place at The Den. The last time they met was in 2012 at Upton Park, where authorities banned alcohol in the stadium and nearby pubs to keep the peace.

The history between these teams is filled with tension. In a 2009 League Cup match, there were 13 arrests, three pitch invasions, and a stabbing. West Ham won that match 3-1 but received a fine of 115,000 pounds from the FA.

Deep roots of division

The rivalry started over a century ago. Millwall Athletic was founded in 1885 by factory workers on the Isle of Dogs. Thames Ironworks, which later became West Ham, started in 1895. The two groups of workers had competing business interests, which sparked the tension. Their first competitive match was in 1899, with Millwall winning 2-1.

Over the decades, the rivalry grew more violent. In 1972, during a testimonial match for Harry Cripps, fans clashed using bottles, knives, and darts. In 1976, a Millwall fan named Ian Pratt died during a fight at New Cross Station. During a 1978 match, police used a helicopter for the first time at an English football game.

Things have changed since their last meeting. West Ham have moved to the London Stadium and won a European trophy. Millwall have stabilised in the Championship, earning 83 points last season. Millwall boss Alex Neil said: "When a game like that means so much to your fan base, there is always extra importance."
