Drew Lock steps up for 2-0 Seahawks
The Seattle Seahawks are off to a perfect 2-0 start this season after beating the Arizona Cardinals 31-7. Backup quarterback Drew Lock stepped in to start and put on a great performance, throwing three touchdown passes. All three of those touchdowns went to receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.
Lock completed 19 of his 26 passes for 235 yards and had no interceptions. He was sacked only once. The victory was Seattle's 12th consecutive win stretching back to week 12 of last season. It was also their 10th straight win over the Cardinals.
Smith-Njigba and defense dominate
Jaxon Smith-Njigba had a huge day, catching touchdown passes of 82, 7, and 12 yards. He finished with over 150 receiving yards. This makes him only the third player in Seahawks history to have at least 150 receiving yards and three touchdowns in a single game.
The Seattle defense was also outstanding. After Arizona tied the score at 7-7 in the second quarter, the defense allowed the Cardinals only four more first downs. Seattle outgained Arizona 381 yards to 151 yards. Running back Emanuel Wilson also stepped up, rushing for 92 yards on 21 carries after starter Jadarian Price left with a chest injury.
Darnold close to a return
Even with Lock playing well, starting quarterback Sam Darnold could be back soon from his glute injury. Coach Mike Macdonald said Darnold's recovery timeline has improved. Darnold might return to practice this week and could even play in the next game.
Macdonald made it clear that the starting job belongs to Darnold if he is healthy. "If Sam can play, he's going to play," Macdonald said. Lock also thanked Darnold for helping him study Arizona's defense before the game, showing the strong bond between the two quarterbacks.
