Double Injury Blow on International Duty
Liverpool are facing major concerns in attack after Alexander Isak and Cody Gakpo suffered injuries during the international break.
Isak had to pull out of the Sweden camp due to a minor thigh injury. Sweden coach Graham Potter confirmed the setback before their 3-1 win over Poland. Potter explained that Sweden had to adapt without their main forward. Meanwhile, Gakpo hurt his ankle while playing for the Netherlands against Serbia following a heavy challenge from Sasa Lukic. Netherlands boss Xavi confirmed the ankle problem and hoped it would not keep the attacker out for long.
Isak Rediscovering His Best Form
The setbacks come at a bad time for manager Andoni Iraola. Isak has enjoyed a strong start to the campaign, scoring five goals in eight matches for club and country. His tally of four league goals has already passed the three goals he scored during the whole of last season.
The 27 year old joined Liverpool from Newcastle United for a British record fee of 125 million pounds in 2025. His first year at Anfield was disrupted by fitness issues and a leg fracture, but he has started all five Premier League matches this term. He also scored the winner in a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on September 20.
Demanding Fixture List Ahead
Gakpo has also been in fine form, providing two goals and four assists in six games across all competitions. He has created three league goals for Isak this season. Combined, the two forwards have scored five of Liverpool's seven Premier League goals so far.
Liverpool now face a tight run of nine matches in 29 days after the international break. That schedule includes a home match against Manchester City on October 11. If both forwards miss game time, Iraola will need other attacking players to step up immediately.
