Historic Low at Anfield
Arsenal earned a 1-0 win at Anfield through a 16th minute goal from Kai Havertz. The result marked Arsenal's first win at Liverpool in over 14 years.
It was also a difficult day for the hosts. For the first time since the 2003 to 2004 season, Liverpool failed to get a single shot on target in a home Premier League match. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta praised his players after the game, calling the defensive effort remarkable.
Liverpool did push for an equalizer in the first half. They recorded 28 touches inside Arsenal's penalty box, but they could not find a way past David Raya. Florian Wirtz hit the crossbar with a free kick, while Alexis Mac Allister headed an effort over the bar. Jurriën Timber also pulled Alexander Isak's shirt inside the box, but no penalty was given.
Expensive Lineup Fails to Deliver Goals
Liverpool have now scored just four Premier League goals at Anfield this season. That matches their lowest total after five home league games, previously recorded in 1913 and 2012. They have failed to score at home against Fulham, Manchester City, and Arsenal.
The club spent £354 million to sign Alexander Isak, Bradley Barcola, and Florian Wirtz. Along with Cody Gakpo, the main forward line cost over $500 million. However, the attack is not producing results.
In nine league matches this term, Liverpool have scored 11 goals. That is two fewer than Ipswich Town and only one more than Manchester United. Liverpool also rank 19th in the league for big chances created, having managed just seven so far. Against Arsenal, Isak had only 26 touches, while Wirtz was substituted in the second half.
European Form Offers Different Story
Manager Andoni Iraola faces a clear contrast in performances. While the team struggles domestically, Liverpool have scored 12 goals in three UEFA Champions League games against LASK, Villarreal, and Atlético Madrid.
Iraola explained that opponents and styles of play differ between competitions. Barcola also noted in a recent interview that the Premier League is more physical and less technical than Ligue 1, which affects how players adapt.
There was one positive note in midfield against Arsenal. Nineteen year old Trey Nyoni made his first league start. He completed 53 passes and 14 line breaking passes, offering hope as Iraola searches for the right balance in his side.
