Okafor Strikes Late for Leeds
Tottenham Hotspur saw their unbeaten run come to an end at Elland Road as Leeds secured a 1-0 victory on Saturday.
The game was settled in the 79th minute when substitute Noah Okafor scored past goalkeeper Antonin Kinsky. Okafor had been on the pitch for just 97 seconds after being sent on by manager Daniel Farke.
The victory ended a five match winless run for Leeds. It also extended their unbeaten home run in the Premier League to nine matches, which is their longest streak at Elland Road since 2001. Meanwhile, Tottenham remained winless in their last 51 matches after conceding the first goal.
The Controversy Around Bogle
The main talking point came after half an hour when Jayden Bogle caught Tottenham winger Mathys Tel on the ankle. Referee John Brooks and VAR official Tony Harrington decided against showing a red card, citing a lack of speed going into the challenge.
Tel was later seen limping down the tunnel. The decision sparked plenty of debate among players and fans.
Tottenham midfielder Xavi Simons went on Instagram to compare Bogle's challenge to the red card he received against Liverpool last season. However, Farke defended his player after the match, describing Bogle as a butterfly and probably the softest player in the whole league.
De Zerbi and Farke React
Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi expressed surprise at the refereeing decision, but he refused to blame the officials for the loss. He said he has big confidence in the referee and stressed that his team must focus on where they can improve.
De Zerbi also admitted he was surprised by his team's performance after halftime. He noted that they had spent the entire week preparing for the intense atmosphere at Elland Road, but they failed to play as planned.
Farke praised his squad for earning the victory. He explained that after a difficult stretch of away matches, teams have to work hard to win back momentum rather than expecting to easily play opponents off the park.
