A Tough Night in Cleveland

LeBron James experienced a very difficult outing on Friday night during a 119-96 NBA Cup loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers. James finished the game with just eight points on 3-for-12 shooting and committed seven turnovers. This rough performance ended a 22-year streak of scoring at least 10 points in Cleveland. The last time he scored fewer than 10 points in this arena was on Dec. 29, 2004, a day before his 20th birthday.

Reception from the Crowd

Fans in the arena stood to cheer when James was introduced, giving him louder roars than all of the Cleveland starters. James noted that nothing could compare to the hostile reception he faced on December 2, 2010, when he returned to Cleveland after joining the Miami Heat. Cavaliers Coach Kenny Atkinson also admitted that the team felt depressed after losing out on signing James this offseason, as James chose the Sixers in free agency over several other teams including Cleveland.

Offensive Struggles for the Team

James was not the only player who struggled on the court. Fellow MVP Joel Embiid also had one of the worst games of his career, finishing 0-for-9 with six points. Together, James and Embiid became the third different former MVP duo in NBA history to each score in single digits and shoot 25 percent or worse from the field in the same game. James admitted that he did not feel in a good rhythm offensively. The Sixers hold an 8-2 record and will play the Bulls in Chicago on Sunday.
