LeBron James Leads 76ers To Victory Over Knicks With Late Clutch Shots

James delivers in late moments

LeBron James came up big late on Friday night to guide the Philadelphia 76ers to a 98-93 win over the New York Knicks in an NBA Cup matchup at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The victory moved the Sixers to 5-1 on the season.

The Knicks wiped out an 11 point fourth quarter deficit after a step back 3-pointer from Jalen Brunson. James responded right away by backing down forward OG Anunoby and hitting a fadeaway jumper. He then added a putback layup with 11.9 seconds left to put Philadelphia ahead by five points.

Sixers coach Nick Nurse said it was the best game James has played for the team so far. Guard Tyrese Maxey called James a calming presence during late game moments.

Historic numbers for the veteran

This was the first 20 point performance for James since joining the Sixers. He finished with 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 8 assists.

It marked his 68th game with at least 20 points since turning 40 years old. That total is more than every other player aged 40 or older in NBA history combined, who together have 67 such games. James also tied Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as the fifth oldest player in league history, at 41 years and 304 days old, to record a 20 point game.

James stated after the game that he never expected his career to stretch across 24 years. He added that he is enjoying his time in Philadelphia and is happy with his choice to join the team.

Clutch success despite missing stars

Philadelphia earned the win despite forward Jaylen Brown sitting out due to a left patellar injury. James took charge early with 12 points in the first half. He managed only two points in the third quarter on free throws before returning to form with six points in the fourth quarter.

All five of Philadelphia's wins this season have come during clutch time, defined as the final five minutes when the score is within five points. The Sixers have now beaten New York twice this season. Before this run, the Knicks had won six straight games against Philadelphia, including a second round playoff sweep.
