Big moves in Philadelphia
The Philadelphia 76ers have completely rebuilt their squad for the new NBA season. They signed forward Dean Wade to a four year, $39 million contract and guard Anfernee Simons to a two year, $12.3 million deal.
They also traded for five time All Star Jaylen Brown and signed LeBron James on a veteran's minimum contract. With several major stars now on the roster, expectations are incredibly high for the team. Their first big test comes in their first preseason game on Monday against the defending champion New York Knicks.
Building team chemistry
Training camp started with the team's stars working out together on September 28. LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Tyrese Maxey, and Joel Embiid met on the practice floor to build rhythm and practice playing together. A team source said they worked on passing out of the post and making extra passes when defenses inevitably trap them.
Young guard VJ Edgecombe is also fitting in well. The 21 year old fifth starter took the initiative to start a team group chat this summer, asking Maxey to add LeBron to the group. James later praised the young guard, calling him "A star."
Coach Nick Nurse also held a 30 minute meeting on September 29 to set the team's goals, focusing on fast transition play and accountability. Nurse had actually discussed this fit with James back in July, when James's agent Rich Paul called the coach while he was on a golf course.
Seeking inspiration
The team is trying to end a 43 year championship drought in Philadelphia. To help inspire the players, Coach Nurse brought in pastor Philip Anthony Mitchell from Atlanta to speak to the team for 20 minutes on September 30. Team president Mike Gansey said the players were locked in during the talk.
