Penalty Claims Turned Down

Coventry City manager Frank Lampard was frustrated with the officiating after his side suffered a 3-1 defeat against Everton on Friday. Lampard felt three major refereeing decisions went against his team and directly altered the outcome of the match.

The first incident involved Everton defender James Tarkowski and Coventry player Caleb Yirenkyi. Tarkowski appeared to pull Yirenkyi's hair inside the penalty area during a first half cross, but no penalty was awarded. Lampard said he was told after the game that officials felt it was not enough of a hair pull to give a spot kick, even though any hair pull is still classified as a foul under the rules.

Controversial VAR Decisions

Coventry suffered another setback when Taiwo Awoniyi went down following a tackle by Vitaliy Mykolenko. VAR ruled the foul occurred marginally outside the penalty box. Lampard disagreed with that finding, stating contact was made on the line of the box, which should have resulted in a penalty.

Everton forward Thierno Barry scored twice in the match, but his second goal brought further complaints from Lampard. The Coventry boss believed Barry used his hand to flick the ball into the net before scoring. VAR checked the incident and allowed the goal to stand. Lampard stated that if one or two of those key decisions went their way, the match would have been completely different.

Match Details and Moyes Response

Lampard spoke to fourth official Sam Barrott at the start of the second half, though he said he received no clear explanations on the sideline.

Yann Gboho scored his first goal for Coventry in the match. However, Everton earned the win through Barry's two goals and a strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall nine minutes from time. Barry has now scored 10 goals this season.

Everton manager David Moyes rejected all of Lampard's views on the VAR calls. Moyes praised Barry after the game, joking that Erling Haaland might worry about Barry catching him. Moyes added that Everton took a gamble signing Barry early and expressed delight with the striker's performance.
