Late drama leaves United frustrated
Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens says the squad wants to clear the sour taste from their late draw against Tottenham Hotspur. United looked set for victory at Old Trafford on Saturday night after Bryan Mbeumo put them 1-0 ahead.
Tottenham were reduced to ten men when Rodrigo Bentancur received a red card. Despite having the advantage, Michael Carrick's side failed to hold on to their lead. Dominic Solanke scored in stoppage time to grab a 1-1 draw for the visitors, which brought loud boos from the home fans at full time.
Worst start in forty years
The result leaves United with only six points from their opening six Premier League matches. It is their worst start to a league season since 1986, putting increased pressure on Carrick and the team.
Defensive weakness has been a major problem for United, as they have failed to keep a clean sheet in the league so far this season. Solanke scored the late equaliser after turning in a cross from Sandro Tonali, with Lisandro Martinez unable to prevent the goal.
Lammens admitted that defending as a team must improve, particularly when dealing with opposition crosses. He said that while the performance was better in some areas, small details ultimately cost them two important points.
Focus turns to European action
United must bounce back quickly as they prepare for a busy run of fixtures away from home. Their next test comes against Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, followed by a Premier League trip to face Leeds United on Sunday. Another European trip to Como awaits shortly after.
Lammens believes that having matches come thick and fast can help the team get over Saturday's disappointment. He stated that the squad worked very hard last season to qualify for European football and remains eager to advance in the tournament.
