Emergency Meeting in Spain

LaLiga president Javier Tebas has held a meeting with Yao Jing, the Chinese Ambassador to Spain. The two met to find solutions after comments made by Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappe sparked outrage in China. The issue started when Mbappe spoke about a meme comparing him to Mao Zedong, who was the founder of the People's Republic of China.

Tebas posted about the meeting on his X account. He explained that LaLiga wants to move past the incident and protect its image. Over recent years, the Spanish league has built strong ties with Chinese football organisations, businesses, and broadcasters to grow Spanish football in China.

Broadcasts Suspended and Sponsorships Lost

The controversy has caused major problems for both LaLiga and the player. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV took action by suspending evening broadcasts of LaLiga matches. In addition, any matches featuring Mbappe were pulled from broadcast schedules.

Mbappe has also suffered financial consequences. At least three companies have cut their ties with the France international since he made the remark.

This fallout threatens valuable business agreements. LaLiga holds several major deals in the country, including a strategic partnership with the Chinese Professional Football League that runs through 2029. The league also works with China Media Group to bring Spanish football closer to local fans. Tebas stated that China is a strategic partner and he hopes a single incident will not destroy their progress.

Apologies from Mbappe and Real Madrid

Mbappe tried to calm the situation by issuing a public statement on Tuesday. He posted an apology on his social media accounts and admitted that his comment regarding Mao Zedong was ill judged.

Real Madrid followed with their own official statement on Wednesday. The Spanish club, which owns a percentage of Mbappe's image rights, apologised directly to the Chinese people for any discomfort caused by their player.

In their statement, Real Madrid stressed that the club holds deep respect for China, its history, and its culture. They also mentioned their strong appreciation for the millions of Chinese fans who support the team.
