A new era in Los Angeles
The Los Angeles Lakers started their season with a dominant 127-105 victory over the Golden State Warriors. It was their first game without LeBron James, who left in free agency to sign a two-year, 8 million dollar contract with the Philadelphia 76ers. James scored 14 points, 9 rebounds and 7 assists in Philadelphia's opening night victory against New York on Tuesday.
Austin Reaves signed a four-year, 180 million dollar deal to stay in Los Angeles. Reaves is now the longest-tenured Laker, entering his sixth season. He acknowledged missing James, but noted that the team must move forward with its new roster.
Doncic steps into the spotlight
Luka Doncic took charge on and off the court for the Lakers. Before the game, he bought a full page advertisement in the Los Angeles Times for the fans. He also provided free parking in a nearby lot and free bike rides to the arena. Doncic addressed the home crowd directly over the microphone before tipoff to thank them for their support.
On the court, Doncic recorded 28 points and 7 assists. He hit a half court shot right at the halftime buzzer. His teammate Walker Kessler made all 12 of his field goal attempts, including 10 dunks, helping propel the Lakers to a comfortable win.
Warriors and Lakers look ahead
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr reflected on the past before the game. The Warriors met James in four straight NBA Finals when James played for the Cleveland Cavaliers. Kerr noted that those Finals will live in history forever, but stated that both squads are entering new phases.
Reaves mentioned that it felt strange to see James in a Sixers jersey, but the focus remains on building chemistry with Doncic and the current group.
