African stars shine in NFL opening week
The new NFL season started with some brilliant performances from players with African roots. Leading the way was Kwity Paye, a Guinea born Liberian defensive end who made a massive impact for the Las Vegas Raiders. Paye helped his new team secure a 27-13 victory over the Miami Dolphins.
Paye was involved in three of the five sacks on Malik Willis during his first regular season game for the Raiders after moving from the Indianapolis Colts. He ended the game with two sacks, four quarterback hits, and six tackles. He started strong by pinning the Dolphins back two yards on his very first tackle of the game.
Big moments for Monangai and Smith Njigba
Kyle Monangai, a first generation Cameroonian American running back, also had a huge game. He scored a career best 61 yard running touchdown for the Chicago Bears in their 59-37 win against the Carolina Panthers. His run stretched the lead to 14 points at the end of the third quarter.
Jaxon Smith Njigba, who has Sierra Leonean heritage, showed why he is the reigning NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He gained 122 yards across eight receptions and scored a touchdown in the Seattle Seahawks' 13-10 victory over the New England Patriots.
Defensive highlights across the league
Several other players with African heritage made big plays on defense. Boye Mafe forced a fumble for the Cincinnati Bengals in their 33-27 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Foyesade Oluokun made an interception as the Jacksonville Jaguars beat the Cleveland Browns 34-10.
Kingsley Enagbare registered a sack in the New York Jets' 23-10 win over the Tennessee Titans, while Felix Anudike-Uzomah got a sack for the Kansas City Chiefs in their 31-10 win against the Denver Broncos.
