Slow Start for Champions
The New York Knicks remain winless after a third straight defeat. This time, they lost 111-102 to the Orlando Magic at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.
The Knicks blew a 10-point lead with 9:20 left in the game. They allowed 40 points in the fourth quarter alone.
This makes them the first defending champion to open a season with three losses since the 2011-12 Dallas Mavericks. That Mavs team had to wait until their fourth game to get a win.
Brunson Takes the Blame
Jalen Brunson scored 28 points to lead the Knicks, but he struggled with efficiency. He shot 12-of-28 from the field and missed six of his seven 3-point attempts.
Everything falls on my shoulders, Brunson said when talking about the team's sputtering offense. He added that he needs to be a better leader to ensure the players are in the right spots.
Coach Mike Brown and Brunson both pointed out that small mistakes are hurting the team. The Knicks started with a 12-0 advantage but only led by four at halftime.
Looking for Answers
The Knicks have shown flashes of their past playoff form against teams like Philadelphia, Boston, and Orlando, but they cannot sustain it. They entered the day ranked 29th in offensive efficiency.
Coach Brown stated that the team has looked lethargic and a step slow. He mentioned a lack of crispness in the frontcourt and a need for more physicality on both sides of the ball.
The undefeated Detroit Pistons will visit Madison Square Garden next.
