Knicks celebrate NBA Cup title at Madison Square Garden
The New York Knicks had a memorable Tuesday at Madison Square Garden by raising two banners. Before hanging their championship banner ahead of the season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers, the team put up a banner to celebrate their NBA Cup title from last season.
From no banner to double celebration
The Knicks broke with tradition last December when they became the first team to win the tournament and not put up a banner. At the time, the club explained that they were looking ahead to bigger things.
They ended up winning the biggest prize possible by beating the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals. That victory earned the team its first championship since 1973. The Knicks had also beaten the Spurs in the NBA Cup final.
The NBA Cup banner went up sometime after the Philadelphia 76ers finished their morning shootaround at the arena. Coach Mike Brown explained that the banner is a recognition of what the players accomplished during a year of ups and downs, and a special moment for the fans.
This NBA Cup banner is the first one raised at Madison Square Garden by the Knicks since they won the Atlantic Division title in the 2012 to 2013 season.
