Knicks halt contract negotiations

The New York Knicks have decided to put all contract extension talks with key players Karl-Anthony Towns and Josh Hart on hold. The franchise announced that their focus is entirely on preparing for the upcoming season.

A team spokesperson stated that the organization wants to deliver another year for their fans to be proud of. Because of this, they will not negotiate contract extensions until later in the season and will remain focused on the start of the season.

Towns is eligible for a four year deal worth over 276 million dollars. He is due to make 57 million dollars this season and has a 61.1 million dollar player option for next season. The Knicks offered Towns a four year deal worth approximately 200 million dollars, but negotiations have now stopped.

Frustrations and financial limits

Towns has expressed his frustration with the contract talks. He stated that he wants to do something that can keep the team together and work with the Knicks while also feeling valued, but added that none of those things have come close to happening.

Last season, Towns was a key player in the Knicks championship run. He averaged 15.9 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists as New York won the title in a five game Finals series over the San Antonio Spurs.

Josh Hart is also eligible for an extension. He will make 20.9 million dollars this season, and there is a team option for 22.3 million dollars in the 2027 to 2028 season. Meanwhile, Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby will be eligible for extensions next offseason.

Knicks owner James Dolan has made it clear that the team will not go into the second spending apron, which means tough financial decisions are ahead. The team already let backup center Mitchell Robinson leave to sign with the Boston Celtics. Despite these changes, the Knicks have the second best odds to win the title again this year.
