Knicks respond after early deficit
The New York Knicks ended their three game losing streak to start the season by beating the Detroit Pistons 111-97 at Madison Square Garden. The win was the first of the year for New York, while it handed Detroit their first defeat of the season.
Detroit had dominated New York last season, winning all three matchups by an average of 30 points. The Pistons took an early 15 point lead in this game, but New York took control in the middle two quarters. The Knicks outscored Detroit 63-25 across the second and third quarters to erase the deficit and build a big lead.
Big performances from Towns and Bridges
Karl-Anthony Towns led the way with 27 points and 20 rebounds. This was the 14th time in his career that he finished with at least 25 points and 20 rebounds, and the fourth time he did it in a Knicks uniform. Head coach Mike Brown challenged Towns at halftime to do a better job guarding Detroit center Paul Reed, who was playing extra minutes because All Star center Jalen Duren was injured.
Mikal Bridges also made an impact by hitting four 3 pointers after failing to hit any in his first three games. Point guard Jalen Brunson scored 23 points on 5 for 18 shooting and drew enough fouls to make Detroit defender Ausar Thompson foul out in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, Pistons guard Cade Cunningham was held to 4 for 14 shooting after the first quarter.
