Guards Question Celebrity Fandom
New York Knicks players Tyler Kolek and Miles McBride recently shared their thoughts on famous courtside supporters. In a video released on Thursday, the guards were asked to name the most performative celebrity fan they had seen at a basketball game.
Kolek brought up pop star Taylor Swift, and McBride agreed with his teammate. "Maybe Taylor Swift? I don't know if I've seen her at any other games," Kolek said of her appearance at Game 4 of the NBA Finals. He admitted that her schedule might keep her away from Madison Square Garden regularly, but he still described her fandom as "a little performative."
Loyalty Under Debate
McBride pointed out other famous faces who regularly visit Madison Square Garden. He named actor Ben Stiller and comedian Tracy Morgan as examples of "solid" celebrity fans who support the team consistently.
Kolek knew his comments might draw backlash from music supporters. "I'm going to get some hate from the Swifties," he added after making the statement about the singer.
Franchise Responds To Claims
The Knicks organization did not agree with the players. The team released a statement clarifying that Swift has supported the organization for a long time.
"Taylor Swift has been a Knicks fan for many years, has a long history with Madison Square Garden, and we are incredibly appreciative of her support of the organization," the team stated. Records show Swift was photographed at games as far back as 2014. That was seven years before McBride joined the Knicks and a decade before Kolek arrived.
Memorable Moments At The Garden
Swift was last seen sitting courtside at Madison Square Garden on June 10. That night, the Knicks completed the largest comeback in NBA Finals history, overcoming a 29 point deficit in a 107-106 victory over the San Antonio Spurs.
Less than a month later, Swift returned to the venue on July 3. She used the arena for her wedding to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.
