Tyler Kolek and Miles "Deuce" McBride raised questions about pop star Taylor Swift during an NBA 2K League livestream on YouTube on Thursday. The two New York players were asked to name the fakest celebrity fan sitting courtside at an NBA game.
Kolek named Swift and called her appearances very performative. He said celebrities like her just want to be seen at games rather than being actual fans. McBride agreed with his teammate. Kolek noted he expected backlash from Swifties, while adding that Swift has a lot going on and cannot attend every game.
Praise For Other Celebrities
While questioning Swift, McBride defended other famous supporters who attend games. He called actors Ben Stiller and Tracy Morgan solid examples of true celebrity fans for the team.
The livestream comments quickly sparked a reaction online, prompting the team to step in and clear up their official position regarding Swift.
Official Team Response
On Friday, a team spokesperson released a statement defending Swift. The spokesperson stated that Swift has been a fan for many years and has a long history with Madison Square Garden. They added that the organization is incredibly appreciative of her support.
Swift's connection to the venue stretches back to 2003, when she sang in a halftime talent contest at 13 years old. Her relationship with the venue continued in July, when her wedding to Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce was held at Madison Square Garden.
Recent Courtside Games
Swift has attended notable games recently. She was courtside for Game 4 of the NBA Finals wearing a Stevie Knicks shirt while sitting beside her friends Alana Haim, Este Haim and Mariska Hargitay.
She was also courtside for Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals when New York played against the Cavaliers. Swift watched that game with Kelce, who is a longtime fan of Cleveland sports.
