The game winning shot
Klay Thompson proved he still has the magic touch on Wednesday night. The veteran forward hit a three pointer with just one second left on the clock in overtime to give the Miami Heat a 117-116 victory over the LA Clippers. It was his eighth successful shot from beyond the arc during the game.
The Heat were down by two points in the final moments of the extra period. Bam Adebayo set a screen that left Thompson wide open in the left corner. Giannis Antetokounmpo found him with the pass, and Thompson let it fly before the defense could recover.
Thompson later said that he felt he had a lot of space. He noted that he has taken thousands of shots from that spot and felt good as soon as the ball left his hand. Antetokounmpo praised his teammate after the game. He said that whenever Thompson shoots the ball, you feel like it is going in.
Miami fights back from 20 points down
This was not an easy win for Miami. They had to fight back after trailing by 20 points earlier in the contest. The comeback was built on a strong defensive performance in the second half and a massive game from Adebayo. The center led all scorers with 35 points and provided the screen that allowed Thompson to hit the winner.
The game almost ended in regulation when a late foul call caused some tension. Miami successfully challenged a call against Pelle Larsson, but officials ruled that Adebayo had committed a foul instead. Rui Hachimura went to the line for the Clippers and made one of two free throws to force overtime.
Heat coach Erik Spoelstra credited his team for their grit during the second half. He said the players earned the win through their defensive intensity. Spoelstra added that it was good to finally get some karma on their side.
Thompson finds his form in Miami
Thompson finished the night with 30 points. This was the first time he had made eight three pointers in a single game since December 2023. The 36 year old joined the Heat this summer after leaving the Dallas Mavericks. He is currently fourth in league history for the most three pointers made.
The victory brings the Heat to a record of three wins and five losses for the season. It is a positive step after the team lost its first four games. Spoelstra mentioned that Thompson is working hard to stay in shape and show the skill set he has had throughout his career.
The coach also noted that the team is still putting the pieces together after the major trade for Antetokounmpo in July. This result gives the team some momentum as they look to turn their season around.
