College Star In Kentucky
Cliff Hagan was born in Owensboro and stayed close to home for college, playing under coach Adolph Rupp at the University of Kentucky. He helped the Wildcats win the 1951 NCAA title and posted an 86-5 record during his time there. His single-game scoring record of 51 points stood at the school until 1970.
After his college days, the Boston Celtics drafted him in the third round in 1953. He spent two years serving in the military before starting his professional career.
NBA Success And Championships
Boston traded Hagan and Ed Macaulay to the St. Louis Hawks in April 1956 for the draft rights to center Bill Russell. While Russell won many titles with the Celtics, Hagan got his revenge in the 1958 NBA Finals. Led by Hagan and Bob Pettit, the Hawks beat the Celtics for the championship. Hagan averaged a league-best 27.7 postseason points during that run and reached the Finals in four of his first five seasons in St. Louis.
He finished his career as a player-coach for the Dallas Chaparrals in the ABA. He remains the first player to be an All-Star in both the NBA and the ABA. In 1978, he became the first Kentucky player inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
