Walker steals the show in Chiefs debut
The Kansas City Chiefs enjoyed a perfect start to their season with a 31-10 victory over the Denver Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium. All eyes were on quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who returned to the field nine months after undergoing surgery on his left knee. However, it was new signing Kenneth Walker III who stole the spotlight.
Walker, the reigning Super Bowl MVP who joined the Chiefs in March, had an incredible debut. He finished the game with 191 all purpose yards and two touchdowns. This included 173 rushing yards, with a brilliant 60 yard touchdown run on a fourth and inches play in the third quarter. He is only the third player since 2000 to rush for over 100 yards in his Chiefs debut.
Tough night for Nix and the Broncos
It was a miserable night for the Denver Broncos and their quarterback Bo Nix. Nix was also making a comeback after two offseason surgeries on his fractured right ankle. He struggled to find any rhythm, throwing an interception on Denver's very first drive.
The Chiefs defense dominated the game, sacking Nix four times. Rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane intercepted Nix to set up Kansas City's first touchdown. Denver's big offseason signing, wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, was kept quiet all night, finishing with just one catch for 2 yards. Running back J.K. Dobbins was also underused, getting only three carries in the first half.
Mahomes makes a solid return
While Walker dominated, Mahomes showed he is back to full fitness. He opened the scoring with a 15 yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter, reaching a top speed of 15.8 mph. He later found his passing rhythm to end the game with 184 passing yards and two touchdowns.
For Denver, Nix did manage a quick response after his early mistake, leading a touchdown drive on their second possession. But he remained shaky, fumbling three times and losing one.
