The gap in contract talks
Karl Anthony Towns wants to stay with the New York Knicks, but the two sides are far apart on a contract extension. Towns is eligible for a four year, $276 million deal that would keep him with the team through the 2030 to 2031 season.
However, the Knicks' latest offer was a four year contract worth about $200 million. Towns has expressed his frustration with the situation. He said, "I want to do something that can keep the team together and work with the Knicks and also values me. None of those things have come close to happening."
Why the sides are split
The Knicks want to avoid major salary cap penalties. Giving a maximum contract to the 30 year old center would push the team into the second apron of the salary cap. Team owner James Dolan has no interest in crossing that financial line.
Towns helped the Knicks win their first championship in 53 years. He has played in 90% of the regular season games and all playoff games over the last two seasons. While he turns 31 next month, his camp believes he deserves more than the current offer. Towns can point to other big men in the league. Bam Adebayo signed a three year, $166 million extension in 2024, and Evan Mobley got a five year, $269 million extension.
On the other side, the Knicks see Towns as an elite role player rather than a top tier superstar. He was third on the team in playoff scoring behind Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby.
If no deal is reached by October 19, Towns can still sign an extension until June 30. He also has a $61 million player option for the 2027 to 2028 season.
