Green Light for Sunday
Miami Dolphins left guard Kadyn Proctor will play against the Detroit Lions on Sunday after clearing concussion protocol, coach Jeff Hafley announced.
The rookie guard experienced concussion symptoms following Miami's victory against the New York Jets in Week 7. As a result, he missed the team's Week 8 defeat against the New England Patriots. Proctor returned to practice on Wednesday and was a full participant in every practice session this week before officially exiting the protocol on Friday.
Boost for the Ground Game
Proctor's absence was clearly felt during the loss to New England. The Dolphins managed a season low 1.74 yards before contact per rush attempt against the Patriots defense. In contrast, they averaged 3.09 yards before contact across the six prior games with Proctor in the starting lineup.
Backup lineman Jarrett Kingston started in place of Proctor last week. Offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said last week was the first game where blocking limited their running production, though he commended Kingston for bouncing back after a slow start. Running back Ollie Gordon II said the team will get back to being themselves with Proctor back in the lineup. Slowik noted that Proctor brings energy to the offense and regularly pushes defensive tackles down the field.
Strong Numbers on the Left Side
Selected 13th overall in this year's draft, Proctor was the first player taken under first year general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan. The 6 foot 7, 360 pound lineman played left tackle at Alabama, but he has played exclusively at left guard for Miami next to 6 foot 7, 325 pound left tackle Patrick Paul.
That pairing has produced impressive running statistics. Miami averages 6.2 yards per rush on inside carries toward the left side of the field, ranking third best in the NFL. They average 3.87 yards before first contact on those runs, which ranks second in the league. Additionally, 23 percent of Miami's carries to the left side gain 10 yards or more, leading the entire NFL.
