A Familiar Face Returns
Liverpool have appointed Julian Ward as their new sporting director. He replaces Richard Hughes, who left the club earlier this month to join Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal. Ward is a familiar name for Liverpool fans. He previously held the same role during the 2022 to 2023 season and recently worked as technical director for club owners Fenway Sports Group.
Ward first joined Liverpool in 2012 from Manchester City. He has worked in several roles, including assistant sporting director under Michael Edwards. Ward is fluent in Portuguese and has strong scouting connections in Portugal and South America. During his previous time at Anfield, he helped sign players like Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Alexis Mac Allister, and Darwin Nunez.
Big Contract Decisions Ahead
The new sporting director has plenty of work waiting for him. His most urgent tasks involve the futures of captain Virgil van Dijk and goalkeeper Alisson Becker. Both players will see their contracts expire next summer. Ward must decide whether to extend the contracts of these two key stars.
Other players are also nearing the end of their deals. Kostas Tsimikas, Joe Gomez, and Wataru Endo have contracts running until 2027. Meanwhile, midfielder Alexis Mac Allister recently revealed that Liverpool have not yet offered him a new contract to extend his stay beyond 2028.
Solving Squad Issues
Liverpool have spent nearly €750 million over the last two years, but the squad still needs work. Ward will need to find new players to improve the team under head coach Iraola.
The right back position is a concern, especially as Conor Bradley returns from a serious knee injury. The club also lacks a specialized right winger, which is another area Ward may need to address in future transfer windows.
Seeking Stability
Liverpool need stability after a lot of changes behind the scenes. Since 2022, the club has had four different sporting directors. Ward's return should bring some needed continuity.
This stability is important as a consortium led by Amit Bhatia, which includes Jeff Bezos, is currently ratifying a 38% stake in the club. While Fenway Sports Group keeps control of football operations, Ward will need to work closely with Iraola to keep the team competitive.
