Julian Ward Returns as Liverpool Sporting Director

A Familiar Face Returns

Liverpool have confirmed that Julian Ward is returning to the club as their new sporting director. Ward is a familiar face at Anfield, having previously held the exact same role during the 2022-23 season.

During his previous time in the position, Ward was responsible for bringing in key players like Darwin Núñez, Alexis Mac Allister, and Cody Gakpo. He eventually stepped down from the role due to personal reasons.

Since leaving his post in 2023, Ward has been working as the technical director for Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool's ownership group. Now, he is back in the main sporting director seat.

Replacing Richard Hughes

Ward takes over from Richard Hughes, who joined Liverpool from Bournemouth after manager Jürgen Klopp left the club. Hughes was responsible for bringing in Arne Slot and Andoni Iraola.

However, Hughes has now left Liverpool to join Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal. This exit opened the door for Ward to step back into the role.

Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon welcomed the appointment. He said Ward's knowledge will enhance their football operations and ensure head coach Andoni Iraola gets the support he needs.

Over a Decade of Experience

Ward is no stranger to how Liverpool operates. He first joined the club back in 2012 from Manchester City, starting out in a role managing the scouting of Spain and Portugal.

Over more than a decade, Ward has held several roles at Anfield. He worked as the loan pathways and football partnerships manager, and also served as assistant sporting director under Michael Edwards.

Ward explained that his long history gives him a clear understanding of the demands and ambitions of the club. He stated that he wants to build on the strong foundations already in place.

Big Decisions Ahead

Ward returns at a time when Liverpool's transfer business is under heavy scrutiny. The club's 2025 transfer window featured the British record signing of Alexander Isak, a move that is yet to pay off on the pitch.

With fans demanding results, Ward will have to work quickly. His immediate focus will be supporting the staff and managing the upcoming transfer windows.
