Match Winner Keeps Title Chase Alive

Julián Álvarez scored the only goal of the match as Atlético Madrid secured a 1-0 victory over Deportivo A Coruña on Saturday. The forward struck in the 48th minute to seal three points for his team.

The win moves Atlético to within two points of league leaders Barcelona, just before Sunday's Clásico match at Camp Nou.

Forward Apologizes for Transfer Drama

After the match, Álvarez took the opportunity to address the fans directly. During the World Cup, the Argentina striker had publicly expressed his desire to leave Atlético Madrid, with Barcelona being his preferred destination.

Álvarez admitted that he made a mistake in how he handled the situation. He said that he wants to apologize to the fans for his words during the World Cup, adding that it was a mistake in terms of how he expressed himself and the timing. He noted that he understands the anger of the supporters because they have been very generous toward him since his arrival.

Ending a Long Goal Drought

The goal on Saturday was Álvarez's first in LaLiga for eight months, and his first home league goal for Atlético since November 2025. It marked his second goal in four days, ending a total goal drought that lasted six months.

His start to the season was disrupted by injuries, and supporters at the Metropolitano have frequently booed and whistled him. While some fans applauded his goal against Deportivo, others continued to show their frustration. Álvarez mentioned that he is feeling better physically and is working hard on improving his form.

Simeone Praises Striker's Honesty

Atlético manager Diego Simeone spoke warmly about his striker after the final whistle. He stated that he has a great deal of respect for people who apologize because doing so is not easy.

Simeone added that he is delighted for Álvarez and feels the team needs him at his best. He pointed out that if the club wants to reach the heights the fans dream of, Álvarez must be performing at his top level.
