Roster spot for De Paula
Los Angeles Dodgers outfield prospect Josue De Paula earned a place on the roster for the National League Division Series against the Atlanta Braves. The 21-year-old will operate as a left-handed pinch hitter. He secured the spot over backup catcher Dalton Rushing, who is restricted to hitting due to an elbow injury.
De Paula made his major league debut three weeks ago. He stepped up as a temporary designated hitter in September when Shohei Ohtani went on the injured list. He performed well across 11 games, recording 10 hits in 31 at-bats alongside 11 walks and only five strikeouts.
Manager confidence
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts praised the young player's approach at the plate. He noted that De Paula possesses a strong understanding of the strike zone and makes quality contact.
Roberts also mentioned that the player stays calm under pressure. He believes those traits will serve the team well during the postseason.
Braves adjustments
The Atlanta Braves made several roster changes ahead of the series. They added right-handed-hitting outfielder Lane Thomas, who missed the wild-card round while recovering from an intercostal strain. Thomas is expected to play against left-handed pitchers.
His inclusion meant outfielder Dominican Smith was left off the roster. The Braves instead selected Rowdy Tellez as their primary left-handed bat off the bench. Braves manager Walt Weiss acknowledged that leaving Smith off the roster was a difficult decision.
