Downs set for normal role
Indianapolis Colts receiver Josh Downs requested a trade earlier this week. However, head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that Downs will play his usual role on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Downs practiced throughout the week without missing sessions. Steichen told reporters that he spoke directly with the receiver to remind him to stay focused on the upcoming match.
Coach demands professionalism
Steichen explained what he said to Downs during their private conversation. He told Downs that he is a professional and must show up for the team, regardless of the trade request.
Steichen praised Downs for his effort in training leading up to the game. He mentioned that Downs handled practice like a professional and that the team expects him to perform at his best on Sunday.
Big roster changes in Indianapolis
The trade request comes during a period of major changes inside the Colts organization. General manager Chris Ballard was fired on Oct. 19. The team also traded key players Quenton Nelson to the Seahawks and DeForest Buckner to the 49ers this week.
Downs spoke on Wednesday about his situation, stating that he is focused on where he is right now and getting ready for the game against Jacksonville. He added that he remains open to whatever happens next.
Important role in the attack
Downs leads the Colts this season with 307 receiving yards. He has taken on a larger workload because primary receiver Alec Pierce has been absent. Tight end Tyler Warren has also missed the last two games.
With key targets missing, opposing defenses have paid closer attention to Downs. This extra attention has contributed to a career low catch rate of 56.5 percent. Downs is currently in the final year of his rookie contract. Other teams have asked about his availability, but Indianapolis has not stated if they are willing to deal him.
