A historic opening night in Orchard Park
The Buffalo Bills celebrated the opening of their new 2.1 billion dollar Highmark Stadium on Thursday with a 41-31 victory over the Detroit Lions. The win felt much more dominant than the final score suggested. With this result, the Bills moved to 2-0 on the season. Joe Brady became the first coach in the history of the franchise to win his first two games. Brady said he wanted his players to remain composed, but the atmosphere in Orchard Park, New York, was loud and emotional. Fans spent hours tailgating before Hall of Famer Bruce Smith led them in chants before kickoff.
Josh Allen dominates on the field
Quarterback Josh Allen admitted he got emotional during the national anthem, saying that being the first quarterback to open this stadium is a special spot. Allen played a brilliant game for the 60,000 fans in attendance. He accounted for five touchdowns, with three passing and two rushing. He scored the first touchdown of the night on a one yard run and then found Joshua Palmer for a 43 yard touchdown. The crowd responded with chants of MVP as the Bills raced out to a 21-0 lead.
Noise levels silence any doubts
The 41 points scored by the Bills were the most in a team's home stadium debut since 1987. Defensive tackle Deone Walker admitted he was stunned by the atmosphere. Brady wanted his team to put on a clinic, and they did exactly that. Any concerns that the new luxury stadium would quiet the fans were quickly put to rest. The old stadium across the street is in ruins, but the famous home field advantage has clearly transferred over to the new building.
