Costly Errors in Game 2
Jose Ramirez stepped up and took the blame after two defensive mistakes on Tuesday night. His errors handed three unearned runs to the Tampa Bay Rays in Game 2 of the American League Championship Series. The result was a 3-1 win for the Rays, which evened the best-of-seven series in St. Petersburg, Florida.
Just a day earlier, Ramirez had helped power the Guardians to an opening win with his bat, recording three hits and scoring twice in a 7-3 victory. Game 2 told a very different story for the star player.
The Fourth Inning Breakdown
The trouble started in a scoreless fourth inning with two outs and Victor Mesa Jr. on first base. Chandler Simpson hit a high chopper to shortstop Brayan Rocchio. Ramirez had shifted toward second base and failed to cover third, allowing Mesa to advance easily.
Four pitches later, Ben Williamson hit a grounder toward third. The ball hit the edge where the turf meets the dirt and skipped through the legs of Ramirez for an error. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt noted that Ramirez got stuck and failed to move his feet properly.
Capitalizing on Mistakes
The Rays wasted no time making Cleveland pay for the miscues. Liam Hicks followed the error by hitting a slider into right center for a two-run single, bringing the score to 3-0.
Manager Stephen Vogt pointed out that the opponent smells blood and takes advantage of mistakes all season long. Vogt added that the team had sloppy plays in the field that need to be cleaned up moving forward.
Ramirez Speaks Out
Speaking through an interpreter after the match, Ramirez explained that the surface played a bit faster and the ball bounced right on the edge between the dirt and the turf. He stated that he tried to knock the ball down and felt very frustrated about the outcome.
Ramirez expressed that he felt bad for not making the play that led to the runs. The Guardians must now regroup after the loss as the series continues.
