Henderson shines on Chelsea home debut

Jordan Henderson enjoyed a brilliant home debut for Chelsea, scoring twice in a 5-1 victory over Bournemouth. The 36 year old midfielder had only scored two goals across his previous four seasons, but he managed two goals in just 70 minutes in this match.

His first goal came after just 65 seconds when he hit a 20 yard drive off the post and into the net. Morgan Rogers scored moments later to double the lead, and João Pedro made it 3-0 just 40 seconds into the second half. Evanilson scored one for Bournemouth, but Pedro added another before Henderson wrapped up the scoring.

Free kick practice pays off

The former Liverpool captain scored the first direct free kick of his career during the match. He revealed that he spent time during the three week international break working on his shooting alongside Chelsea set piece coach Austin MacPhee.

Henderson said that he was consistent in training, which gave him the confidence to take the set piece over Cole Palmer and Morgan Rogers. He joked that Rogers was not too happy about the decision, while Palmer asked which corner they were going to celebrate in. Henderson thanked both players for allowing him to take it.

Praise for Chelsea attacking players

Henderson praised the attacking trio of Palmer, Rogers, and Pedro after the game. He pointed out that while fans love seeing goals, he was most pleased with the work rate and defensive attitude of the team when they did not have the ball.

He stated that their effort gives Chelsea a strong platform. He noted that the forward players are dangerous on the transition and can kill any team with their skill, pace, power, and clinical finishing.
