High standards and lower numbers

The true indication of a player's greatness might be what kind of reaction comes when they produce average performances. Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor met with reporters on Thursday, and the talk quickly turned to a lack of explosive plays. Taylor pointed out that he had a twenty yard run in the recent loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers, but the debate remains because of the lofty standards he faces.

His current average of 3.9 yards per rush is lower than his career mark of 4.8 yards per carry. He also has not posted a 100 yard rushing performance in eleven months. Taylor mentioned that it is still early in the year and the season is very long.

Struggles on the offense

The Colts hold a 2-3 record and have missed the offensive fireworks they expected this year. Quarterback Daniel Jones is having a slow start after recovering from an Achilles tear, and receiver Alec Pierce has missed time with a heel injury. Opposing defenses have made Taylor the main focus by using five man fronts and keeping seven players back.

Despite these hurdles, Taylor still ranks tenth in rushing yards per game with 398 yards and six touchdowns. Running backs coach DeAndre Smith noted that elite players get more yardage than what is actually blocked.
