A Patriots Legend
Jon Morris, who spent 11 years of his 15-year professional football career with the Boston and New England Patriots, has died at the age of 84. The Patriots announced his death on Thursday, though no cause of death was disclosed.
Morris was a standout player at Holy Cross before turning professional. The Boston Patriots drafted him in the fourth round of the 1964 AFL draft, while the Green Bay Packers picked him in the second round of the NFL draft. He chose to stay in New England, starting a long career on the gridiron.
An Impressive Career
During his time with Boston, Morris earned six consecutive AFL All-Star nods as a center from 1964 to 1969. He also earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1970 when the team joined the NFL following the AFL-NFL merger.
Later in his career, Morris played three seasons with Detroit from 1974 to 1977. He finished his playing days with Chicago during the 1978 season.
Tributes to a Pioneer
Patriots chairman and CEO Robert Kraft released a statement following the news. Jon Morris was one of the great players who helped build the foundation of our franchise, Kraft said. For generations of Patriots fans, he represented the toughness, dedication and pride of those early teams.
Morris anchored an offensive line alongside future Patriots Hall of Famers like Gino Cappelletti, Babe Parilli, and Jim Nance. His achievements led to his induction into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2011, and he also made the team's 50th anniversary team in 2009.
