Late scratch in Arlington

Joey Porter Jr will have to wait for his home debut with the Dallas Cowboys. The team announced he was ruled out of Thursday night's game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of an illness. This decision came roughly 1 hour, 45 minutes before the 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff.

Porter actually arrived at the stadium before getting examined and sidelined. The Cowboys acquired him from the Pittsburgh Steelers last week. He managed to play 24 snaps in Sunday's win against the Houston Texans despite practicing only three days. Dallas had just two brief workouts this week due to the quick turnaround before facing the Buccaneers.

Secondary options for Dallas

Without Porter, the Cowboys will likely need to start second-year cornerback Shavon Revel. Revel has been dealing with knee and ankle issues picked up during a Week 3 loss to the Baltimore Ravens in Rio de Janeiro.

Other moves include Reddy Steward being activated from the practice squad for the third straight game. Ameer Speed and Caelen Carson are also active for Dallas. Meanwhile, Week 1 starter Cobie Durant will miss his third consecutive game with a hamstring strain, though he might return in Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers.

Trade condition paused

As part of the trade with the Steelers, the Cowboys must give up a 2027 sixth-round pick. This trade condition requires Porter to be active for two games in order to finalize.

That milestone will now wait at least until next week because of this unexpected illness.
