A Fresh Start in Dallas

Joey Porter Jr. is ready for a new chapter. The cornerback was traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Dallas Cowboys this week. He learned about the trade while watching a movie at the theater and was soon on a plane to Texas.

The move ends a difficult period with the Steelers. Porter was drafted in the second round in 2023 but spent the offseason and training camp waiting for a contract extension that never arrived. He also dealt with a back injury. Porter said he felt disrespected and undervalued during the process, but he is now happy to be in Dallas.

The Cowboys traded a 2027 sixth round pick and a 2028 second rounder to get him. This is the third trade between the two teams since May 2025.

Boosting a Depleted Defense

Dallas needs help in their secondary immediately. Cornerback Cobie Durant is expected to miss his second game with a hamstring injury, while Shavon Revel has struggled to practice due to knee and ankle issues.

The Cowboys defense has struggled through three games. They are 25th in points allowed with 27.3 per game and 30th in yards allowed at 387. They are also one of four teams without an interception this season.

Defensive coordinator Christian Parker called Porter a boundary eraser. Since 2023, Porter ranks 13th among defensive backs when targeted as the nearest defender, allowing a 56 percent completion rate. However, he has also committed 36 penalties in that time, which is the most by any defender. Porter says his next goal is to create more turnovers.
