Contract dispute and return plans
Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has confirmed he will definitely play this season. This comes after he and the team failed to agree on a contract extension before the franchise's regular season deadline.
Porter missed the first two games of the season. He has been dealing with contract negotiations and a long recovery process. Despite the lack of a new deal, he told reporters he expects to play at some point. He also refuted reports that he had requested a trade or sought a second opinion on his injury.
Injury and fitness struggles
Porter has been dealing with a back injury since the first day of training camp. He aggravated his back during a mobility workout and was placed on the physically unable to perform list. Although he was activated to the 53 man roster on August 30, he has not been a full participant in practice yet.
His status on practice reports has shifted between a back injury and conditioning. Porter explained that both issues are keeping him from playing. He said his back has occasional flare ups, and he is still trying to get his fitness back to where it needs to be. He was limited in practice on Wednesday and Thursday.
Facing the Bengals
The Steelers play the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, but Porter is not sure if he will be ready. If he does play, he expects to be on a limited snap count. He said he is following a return to play protocol set by the coaching staff.
Porter said he is excited to face Bengals receivers Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase. He has played against them several times and enjoys the matchup. Coach Mike McCarthy said Porter is on schedule with his recovery and had quality work in practice. His teammates have also shown strong support for him during this period.
