JJ McCarthy Wins Over Giants Management After Trade From Minnesota

JJ McCarthy has impressed New York Giants executives with his maturity and skills since joining the team in September.

From Draft Concerns To New York Deal

The New York Giants loved the physical skills of quarterback J.J. McCarthy before the 2024 draft. Team officials rated his skill set very high back then. They loved his ability to win and lead, but they were not sure about his maturity level at the time. New York decided to pass on him with their sixth overall draft pick and selected wide receiver Malik Nabers instead. The Minnesota Vikings then selected McCarthy with the tenth pick.

Things were not easy for the young quarterback after that. McCarthy missed his entire rookie season because of a knee injury. When he returned to action last year, he struggled on the field. He completed 57.6 percent of his passes, throwing 11 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Leaving Minnesota Behind

McCarthy lost his starting job in Minnesota to Kyler Murray during training camp. An ankle injury kept him out of the preseason finale, and he dropped to third string on the depth chart.

The Giants finally acquired him on September 28. They sent a 2027 fifth round draft pick to the Vikings to bring McCarthy to New York. The Giants had debated taking him almost three years earlier, but they waited and traded for him later.

Since the trade, the quarterback has impressed senior vice president of player personnel Chris Mara. Mara noted that McCarthy looks like a completely different person now. Off the field, the quarterback has grown up, got married, and has a child.

Delivering Results On The Field

McCarthy has already started making an impact in New York. Two weeks ago, he led the Giants to an overtime upset victory against the Texans in Houston.

Mara praised the quarterback after watching him in practice. He said McCarthy has a much better arm than he thought he had and moves around great. Mara added that the arrow is pointing up for the quarterback.

The player is now preparing for another big test. McCarthy will make his second start for the Giants on Sunday when they visit their division rivals, the Philadelphia Eagles.
